All members and other observers are encouraged to submit their own observations for inclusion in the monthly bulletins and also the county annual bird report Birds In Northumbria. A look through these publications will give a good indication of the type of records sought. Breeding data is particularly important but also counts and details of flocks & gatherings, passage movements, arrivals and departures of  migrants, rare and scarce species, etc. are all welcomed.

The preferred method of submitting your records is electronically via a monthly spreadsheet. Currently the spreadsheet and instructions for completion, etc. can be obtained by sending an email to the club’s Data Manager at NTBC.records@googlemail.com. He will provide any advice and assistance that you may require.

Alternatively, if you do not have access to email or a PC then records can be submitted on standard Record Cards. A supply of cards can be obtained by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to the County Recorder. Currently (March 2010) the postage for a supply of 50 record cards amounts to 90p (1st class) or 76p (2nd class). Supplies of Record Cards are also available at Indoor Meetings throughout the winter season.

Please remember that for Rare and Scarce species more details than can be given on either of these formats will be required for assessment by the County Records Committee. Details of these and links to download the appropriate form can be found of the County Records Committee page.

GUIDE TO SUBMITTING BIRD RECORDS

The club has produced a short guide, which has recently been updated, to assist members with submission of their sightings.

The guide (in PDF format) is available at this link

DESCRIPTION WRITING FOR BIRD RECORDS

The club has produced some brief notes in an attempt to assist observers in understanding what may be required  for descriptions of Rare and Scarce species recorded in our area. In addition, copies of descriptions of three recent, accepted records together with photos of the actual birds involved are given as examples.
