Anyone wishing to apply for a grant from the club\u2019s Development Fund should contact the secretary for details of how to apply at&nbsp;ntbcorg@gmail.com<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recent grant awards from the NTBC Development Fund are detailed below:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-adbdfbb64b8b4174dd0de0a162b58492\"><strong>2023<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hen Harrier Tagging Programme (a message here from Conrad Dickinson)<\/strong><br>The club donated \u00a3750 towards the Hen Harrier tagging programme this year.<br>At RSPB Geltsdale there were 2 successful nests. One with 4 chicks fledging and the other with 1 fledging. (In theory, there should have been more nests but 2 males unexpectedly \u201cdisappeared\u201d early in the season). Only this year RSPB introduced a new policy re Sat Tagging in that they did not tag juvenile males because of their smaller size and the weight of the tag. This may change in the future. Of the 5 chicks only one was female, so basically one tag was fitted.<br>The fundraising campaign has been successful however, and I\u2019m planning another 4 talks this Autumn and Spring which should bring the total raised to about \u00a315K. This will be used specifically for future Tags in our region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again many thanks for the support from the Club<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a0b95170e606c220bc8d8f21e9ad26c3\"><strong>2021<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hexham Swift Conservation<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>A grant of \u00a3500 towards the purchase of Swift nest boxes, construction materials and installation costs to improve the availability of suitable nesting sites for this declining species. The project involves local businesses and organisations such as Karbon Homes, Hexham Golf Club and \u201cHexham Space for Nature\u201d. The project is led by Keith Buchanan and Andy Bunten.<br><br><strong>Embleton Quarry Community Nature Reserve<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>A grant of \u00a32700 towards the enhancement and enlargement of this local nature reserve, of local importance for Tree Sparrows and Barn and Tawny Owl.<br><br><strong>North East Beached Bird Survey Group<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>\u00a3270 to expand the capacity for storage of specimens for laboratory analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ac9befa84f14bdda38bb1aa36f6c386f\"><strong>2020<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fair Isle Bird Observatory&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>\u00a3500 contribution towards the rebuilding of the observatory after it\u2019s destruction by fire. Many club members will have visited Fair Isle and be aware of the importance of it\u2019s research and records of migratory birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2812fdc459c56953e34b5bb9d33650e7\"><strong>2018<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Swift Conservation in Morpeth&nbsp;(c\/o Graham Sorrie).<\/strong><br>\u00a3267 for Swift nest boxes in the continuing conservation project promoted in the Lancaster Park and Newgate Street area of Morpeth by Graham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-264a37d9a69d414049d6b2b76486e4ce\"><strong>2017<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Geologgers on Breeding Goldeneye&nbsp;(c\/o Phil Hanmer). <\/strong><br>Funding of \u00a3476 to help Phil maintain his study through it\u2019s second year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>European Breeding Bird Atlas 2&nbsp;<\/strong><br>A contribution of \u00a3100 which includes Mark Eaton\u2019s waived fee from his November 2017 Indoor Meeting presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North East Beached Bird Surveys Group&nbsp;(c\/o Dan Turner). <\/strong><br>Funding of \u00a3250 to help with taxidermy for education and display purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f800b77cccb63c154a61de06637614ef\"><strong>2016<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bird Conservation Project in Gambia&nbsp;(c\/o G. Bowman). <\/strong><br>\u00a3200 contribution towards the creation of permanent freshwater pools to improve habitat quality for winter visitors, involving the local community in their creation and maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flexigraze Conservation Grazing in the North east&nbsp;(c\/o S. Comber). <\/strong><br>\u00a3500 to assist with the conservation maintenance of grasslands at key wildlife sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>British Trust for Ornithology Curlew Appeal&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\u00a3500 contribution towards research into the fortunes of this iconic Northumberland species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>St Mary\u2019s Wetland Group&nbsp;(c\/o C Bradshaw). <\/strong><br>\u00a31000 approved towards fencing and stock proofing the site to enable conservation grazing to commence, for habitat improvement for breeding birds and winter foraging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6ccabe4a6749b1670782ce7b707ebfdc\"><strong>2015<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Breeding shorebirds on Druridge Bay&nbsp;(I Robson &amp; Northumberland Coast AONB). <\/strong><br>\u00a31000 towards fencing and signage to protect ground nesting shorebirds at Chibburn Mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Swift Conservation and Awareness&nbsp;(G Sorrie). <\/strong><br>\u00a3300 for nestboxes as part of a conservation scheme for Swifts in the Morpeth\/Mitford area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-978e970429358b7fde1442e60502430d\"><strong>2013<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kittiwakes 0n the Tyne<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 grant awarded to NTBC member and wildlife photographer and filmaker Cain Scrimgeour to fund a short film promoting the Tyne Kittiwake colony. It is hoped that this project will help highlight the unique nature of the Tyne colony and promote the annual spectacle as part of the area\u2019s rich natural heritage available to visitors and residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Abbeyfields First School, Morpeth<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 grant awarded to fund the purchase of five pairs of binoculars and bird-feeders for their&nbsp;Forest School. The The philosophy of Forest Schools is to encourage and inspire individuals of any age through positive outdoor experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9f03dde454c8d8f291d12cfaff20e825\"><strong>2011<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Koshi Tappu Ringing Station, Nepal.<\/strong><br>A grant awarded to help fund the establishment of Nepal\u2019s first bird observatory at&nbsp;Koshi Tappu Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North East Beached Bird Survey&nbsp;<\/strong><br>A grant awarded to fund the creation of educational materials, including skins and specimens,&nbsp; to help the&nbsp;North East Beached Bird Survey&nbsp;deliver talks across the region about this important project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-28a0e550a9eb3dd8882054e147a197f2\"><strong>2010<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North East Cetacean Project&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A grant awarded to support fieldwork and surveys off the Northumberland Coast in support of this project to generate up to date information on the status of cetaceans off our coastline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BTO&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 species sponsorship (Bewick\u2019s Swan) in the new national atlas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In support of the club\u2019s aims the club sets aside funds into a Development Fund from which we award grants to small ornithological projects we believe are worthy of support.
