{"id":10094,"date":"2017-01-22T11:00:19","date_gmt":"2017-01-22T11:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/?p=10094"},"modified":"2017-01-26T10:41:12","modified_gmt":"2017-01-26T10:41:12","slug":"pacific-diver-weekend-22nd-jan-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/?p=10094","title":{"rendered":"Pacific Diver Weekend &#8211; 22nd Jan 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend dozens of birders gathered at the edge of Ladyburn Lake, to the east of the Druridge Bay Country Park. \u00a0They hoped to catch a glimpse of an expert fish-eater which breeds in Alaska, Northern Canada and Russia known as a <strong>Pacific Diver<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-1-Ladyburn-Jan-17-PB-gallery.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10095\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-1-Ladyburn-Jan-17-PB-gallery.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-1-Ladyburn-Jan-17-PB-gallery.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-1-Ladyburn-Jan-17-PB-gallery-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-1-Ladyburn-Jan-17-PB-gallery-582x400.jpg 582w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>This rare vagrant to the UK, was in the past considered a sub species of Black-throated Diver of which it greatly resembles. They were split however into two species in 2007 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bou.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">British Ornithologists Union (BOU)<\/a>;\u00a0which maintains the British List. The two forms are known to coexist without hybridising in some areas.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-3-PB-Ladyburn-Lake-Jan-17-nbgallery.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10096\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-3-PB-Ladyburn-Lake-Jan-17-nbgallery.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-3-PB-Ladyburn-Lake-Jan-17-nbgallery.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-3-PB-Ladyburn-Lake-Jan-17-nbgallery-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-3-PB-Ladyburn-Lake-Jan-17-nbgallery-533x400.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>Birders were rewarded with amazing views, as the bird proved very friendly and seemed to love the attention. It appeared curious and at times, seemed just as interested in its admirers.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-2-PB-Ladyburn-Lake-Jan-17-gallery.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10097\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-2-PB-Ladyburn-Lake-Jan-17-gallery.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-2-PB-Ladyburn-Lake-Jan-17-gallery.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Pacific-Diver-2-PB-Ladyburn-Lake-Jan-17-gallery-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>The bird was originally spending time on East Chevington and is thought to be the same bird that was reported from Blyth earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<p>In some trees nearby I noted a pair of Bullfinches and over a dozen Siskin. A <strong>Kingfisher<\/strong> also flew past, whilst I was busy watching the Diver.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Siskin-1-PB-Druridge-Bay-CP-Jan-17-nbgallery.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10098 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Siskin-1-PB-Druridge-Bay-CP-Jan-17-nbgallery.jpg\" width=\"342\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Siskin-1-PB-Druridge-Bay-CP-Jan-17-nbgallery.jpg 342w, https:\/\/www.ntbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Siskin-1-PB-Druridge-Bay-CP-Jan-17-nbgallery-257x300.jpg 257w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>On nearby East Chevington, at least four <strong>Scaup<\/strong> were present with over ten Goldeneye, Little Grebes and Mute Swans.
